About Whatchya Wanna

Whatchya Wanna is a decision-making app for the moment when nobody can decide where to eat, what to do, or what to cook. Pick a category, set a few preferences, and it picks one thing at random. Roll again and you get a different one. The Hat is for everything else: add your own options and let it choose.

How a pick is made

For Eat, Drink, Experience, and Do, you give a ZIP code or share your device location. The app looks at what is nearby that matches your distance and filters, then picks one at random. On Eat, local places are weighted over chains.

For Cook, you choose what you want and what you have: cuisine, diet, ingredients, equipment, time, and anything to leave out. Matching recipes come from Spoonacular in random order. If you list ingredients, Spoonacular puts the closest matches first instead, so those picks are less random.

For Watch, you choose a movie or TV series, and can narrow it by genre, streaming service, and era. It picks from a random page of the matching titles on TMDB, which lists them by popularity.

Why it exists

It's the conversation I got tired of having. "What do you wanna do?" "I don't know, what do you wanna do?" And when we weren't from the area, "What should we eat?" "I don't know, what's even around here?"

Someone always has to be the one to make the call and I didn't want to be the one. I wanted something that would do that for me.

Where suggestions come from

Eat and Drink
Places near you from OpenStreetMap, a free map anyone can add to. Local places are favored heavily over chains, and Eat has an Include chains option if you want to stop favoring them.
Experience
Upcoming events from Ticketmaster and from events people submit. Filter by date, category, distance, and price.
Do
Activities near you from Google Places. Do needs an account.
Cook
Recipes from Spoonacular. Each pick links out to the full recipe on the site that publishes it.
Watch
Movies and shows from TMDB. Watch is a separate site with no account.

What it can't tell you

  • Opening hours aren't reliably available for Eat and Drink, so check before you go.
  • OpenStreetMap is built by volunteers, so a place can be missing or out of date. Rolling is random, so a place not coming up doesn't mean it's missing. You can check whether a place is in our data and tell us if it isn't.
  • Event details can change, so confirm date, time, and price before you buy tickets. Some ticket links may earn the site a commission.
  • Cook lets you leave out ingredients, but it is not a promise that a recipe is safe for an allergy. Check the full recipe before you cook.
